Letter from the President

ellis118.JPG

I want to begin this month’s article with a quote from Former Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright:  “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”  I love this quote…it’s bold, it’s brash, and there’s a small part of me that hopes it’s true.  A presenter at AWC’s national conference shared this in his (yep…this came via man) breakout session and it has stuck with me since.  Before using it in my remarks, I Googled the statement to make sure it was accurate and I came across an article regarding Sarah Palin’s misuse of the quote.  She replaced the word “help” with the word “support.”  It’s not a big mistake and I think the statement is just as powerful with either word.  And although it’s a little harsh (especially if you don’t like curse words…which I do), Ms. Albright’s sentiments couldn’t be more appropriate for the true mission of AWC.  Women have a unique and special obligation to one another:  to be supportive, to be helpful, and to make sure other women are promoted and celebrated.  And, through various means, AWC strives to provide these opportunities for our members.
As we celebrate our 52nd Annual Byliner Awards Dinner, Madeleine Albright’s words ring even more true.  On the evening of February 11th, eight extraordinary women will be recognized for their professional accomplishments.  I have no doubt that each of these women can speak to a time when they were “helped” or “supported” by another woman.  And if they weren’t, you can bet that they have made it their mission to “help” or “support” other women throughout their careers.  I hope you will join us for this inspiring night.  While our ultimate goal is to celebrate amazing women, we also hope each woman leaves with a stronger drive to help others succeed.  See you there!
