Scholarships

Proceeds from the Byliner Awards help fund scholarships for Oklahoma women pursuing communication-related degrees. Recipients are selected based on aptitude, achievement and financial need. Every year, the Oklahoma City chapter of AWC awards between $5,000 and $8,000 in scholarships.

Scholarships are awarded at the AWC Bosses Breakfast in the Spring.


2008 Recipients Granted $6,500 in Scholarships

Six college students majoring in the field of communications were award scholarships in mid May by AWC at the annual Bosses Breakfast held at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel in Downtown Oklahoma City.  Fifty AWC members and guests were on hand to congratulate the winners at the breakfast.  The scholarship funds were raised in conjunction with the Byliners Awards Dinner held annually in February.

Applications for the scholarship were submitted to the board during the month of April.  After sifting through many applications, the board chose the scholarship recipients and the winners were notified of their award. 

Scholarship winners are as follows:

  • Christi Mitchell from Oklahoma Baptist University- Ann Simmons Alspaugh Scholarship recipient in the amount of $2,000.
  • Ann Michele King from Oklahoma City University- Chesapeake Scholarship recipient in the amount of $1,500.
  • Cassie Bacon from Oklahoma State University- Martha Collar Scholarship recipient in the amount of $1,000.
  • Johnna Stevenson from Oklahoma State University- Martha Collar Scholarship recipient in the amount of $1,000.
  • Lindsay Bingham from Oklahoma Christian University- Scholarship recipient in the amount of $500.
  • Ashleigh Dunham from Oklahoma State University- Scholarship recipient in the amount of $500.

AWC Professional Meetings

The Association for Women in Communications meets the second Tuesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. at the Will Rogers Theatre in Oklahoma City. The lunch program features a guest speaker with topics ranging from crisis communications to better time management. Cost is $12 for AWC National Student Members. Free parking is located behind the event center.
